Entry 7 - What More Could You Ask For? VOTE
I was on my way to a concert at Foxboro Stadium with my girlfriend
when I
saw a charter bus stopped on the side of the road. At first
I thought
nothing of it, but when I passed it, I could have sworn I saw Dave
standing
there with the bus. I was cutting it close on time before
the beginning of
the show, but I decided to investigate anyway. I got off at
the next exit
and went back to the bus. When I pulled up behind it, my
suspicions were
confirmed as I saw the whole band standing around waiting. I
got out of the
car and casually walked over.
"You guys all set" I asked.
"Well, we got a show in 30 min. We were running late as it was
and then two
tires blew out!" said Dave. "All our stuff is
there and set up, but we're
stuck here."
"If you don't mind cramming in my car, I can take you guys if
that'd help."
I said. I was driving my dad's truck, but there were only 5
seats. "Two of
you'll have to ride in the back."
"That's cool with me." Leroi responded.
"Let's go then!" yelled Dave.
We all piled into the truck and I fired her up. My
girlfriend and I had
been listening to The Lillywhite Sessions on the way down to get
pumped for
the show and it started blaring on the stereo. "Sorry
bout that" I said as
I turned it off. "We were getting psyched for the
show. By the way, this is
my girlfriend, Nicole".
"Hey," they all said in unison.
After about five minutes of chatting, Dave said, "Hey, can
you guys keep a
secret?" Of course we both said "sure".
"We've decided to go back into
the studio after this tour and polish up the Lillywhites to
release next
spring."
Needless to say, I was extremely excited to be one of the only two
people
outside the band with this information, but little did I know that
the night
of my dreams was only beginning.
Right before we arrived at the stadium I asked Dave if he would
mind doing
me a favor. "Sure" was his reply "what's
up?"
"I have my guitar in the back of the truck there, and I was
wondering if
you would be able to play Crush on it tonight." I knew
this was a long
shot, but I figured it was worth a try.
"I'll tell ya what, I'll play the whole show on it" he
said. I was
completely in shock. Dave was going to play an entire show
on MY guitar.
"And you can be on stage for the show."
"Oh wow," was all I could muster.
"Well, it's the least we can do for the guy who basically
saved the show,"
said Carter.
We pulled up to the back of the stadium and we all got out.
Dave told me
to just give the car to a security guard and it'd be taken care
of. I
grabbed my guitar out of the back and handed it to Dave and we ran
into the
stadium. My heart was racing as we were given backstage
passes and taken to
side stage. It was an incredible sight. The boys went
out and played an
incredible set. Right before they played Crush, Dave said to
the crowd,
"this one is for the guy all y'all have to thank for this
show, uh, this
whole thing happenin' tonight. Bring 'em on out."
Two security personnel
escorted us out to the stage and Dave said "these two picked
us up off the
side of the road, back on the road and drove us here tonight, so
everybody
put your hands together, put 'em together for Dave and
Nicole!" We waved to
the crowd and two stools were brought out for us to sit on.
So my
girlfriend and I sat on stage holding each other's hand while Dave
played a
beautiful acoustic rendition of Crush on my guitar.
After the show Dave found me back stage and signed my guitar and
gave it
back to me. He also gave me one of his personal guitars
"for my troubles".
He asked me for my address and gave me a phone number he said I
could reach
him at if I ever wanted to "hang out and just chill".
I thought that was going to be the end of my experience, but I was
wrong.
The next day was a break in the tour. I was exhausted from
the night
before, so I was still sleeping when the doorbell rang. I
crawled out of
bed and shuffled to the door to see Dave standing on my porch.
I let him in
and asked him if he wanted anything.
"No, I'm all set. Just stopped by to give you this and
see how things were
goin," he said as he held out a small package in front of me.
I took the
package and started to open it as he said, "it's a recording
of last night's
show. We record every show that we do, and I thought you
might like a copy
of this one." I was again completely stunned. I
had been planning on
recording the show myself, but since I was backstage, I didn't
really have
the opportunity.
"Wow," was again all I could manage to mutter. He
began to turn towards the
door and I managed another single word, "wait." He
turned towards me with a
sort of "what's up" look on his face. I said,
"Did you wanna hang around
and maybe jam a little?"
"Well, I got a couple hours, so yeah, that sounds cool"
was his reply.
Since I still had the recording equipment that I had rented for
the night
before, I set it up in my living room and we just played whatever
came to
mind for about four hours. It was one of the most powerful
experiences I've
ever had. We jammed out one little riff that Dave said he
would have to use
in the next show.
So, there it is, the most incredible experience any Dave Matthews
Band fan
could ever ask for, and it happened to me. Dave Matthews
played my guitar
in a show, dedicated a song to me and my girlfriend, gave me one
of his own
personal guitars, hand delivered a recording of the show and
jammed with me
in my own home. What more could one person ask for?
